Tawes Theatre
The main home of performing arts at the University of Maryland for 40 years, the Tawes Theatre was the largest auditorium on campus seating over 1400 people.
Due to the construction of the new Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center in 2000, Tawes began to be used less and less and in early 2007 a plan to reuse the facility was introduced. At 81,000 square feet of prime real estate it was bound to happen. Current plans call for renovating the academic section of the building to become the new home for the English Department on campus, although currently there are no plans to reuse the theatre.
